Jessie McGuire Dent
Founder Dent was born in Galveston, Texas, in 1891 and graduated from East District High School.
Later educational experiences included Howard University, University of California in Los Angeles, and Columbia University.
As a Latin teacher, Dean of Girls, affiliation in Civic and community organizations and as a civil rights activist, her impact on the Galveston and the state of Texas community was highly regarded.
It is also noted that she was a plaintiff in a lawsuit that won equal salaries for Black teachers in Galveston, Texas.
